The latest World Investment Report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development has placed Turkey 16th among the countries drawing the most foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2006 with $20.1 billion.
The report also showed that Turkey is placed 51st in FDI and 27th in total FDI stock. According to the report world FDI flows reached 1.3 trillion in 2006, in a 38% increase over the previous year. The largest share belonged to mergers and acquisitions with 67%, only a small part of the investments stemmed from Greenfield investments in developing countries.
According to the report, developing countries — especially Hong Kong, Brazil, Russia and China — made $193 billion in investment in other countries during 2006. Turkey ranked 51st on this list with $934 billion of investment.
