The Dubai Roads and Transportation Authority have reported that the first batch of Dubai Metro trains under construction have been sent for test trials in Japan. The tests are being carried on two new trains for climatic and operational speed tests prior to being sent to Dubai in time for the first Red Line opening which has been targeted for September 9th, 2009.

The agency also reported that the tests were being done under the supervision of top authority officials, including team head Mohammed Essa Al Rowaished, Director of Planning and Development. Also on hand to witness initial speed tests of up to 60km/h was an independent safety assessor appointed earlier this year by the RTA.

The trains will be driverless and will instead be managed from a central control room with the latest electronic and computerised driver systems, with speeds reaching up to 100km/h. According to the RTA in a statement issued today, “the first train underwent dynamic tests at speeds of up to 60 km/h as well as signalling tests for the purpose of driverless operation.”
