Istanbul prepare for 2010

With 2010 fast approaching Turkey is making preparations for Istanbul’s position as a European Capital of Cultural in 2010. Istanbul Municipality Mayoral Advisor T’lin Ers’z has said that the city’s goal for 2010 is to host 10 million visitors. She said, ‘We have large projects under way to see that in 2010 we will be able to host 10 million visitors.’ Ers’z is in charge of tourism-related projects being undertaken by the Istanbul Municipality and noted the ‘tourism platform’ created by the current Mayor as the most significant sign of the commitment the city has to encouraging and developing tourism. The tourism platform hold meetings to discuss ways to promote tourism and have also set up offices open to the public for anyone wishing to contribute ideas for consideration by the municipality. The municipality hope to attract a large number of tourists to the city. ‘What we need is a mass of tourists who understand both culture and art,’ Ers’z said, adding that Istanbul’s real potential was wrapped up in its thousands of years of history.
