Burj Dubai has been renamed to Burj Khalifa,
after Abu Dhabi’s ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Burj Khalifa Dubai, the world’s tallest building, is to be officially opened this evening in Dubai. Coinciding with the fourth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum’s accession, the occasion will be marked by a grandiose opening ceremony which is expected to attract over 6,000 visitors.

Standing at more than 800 metres (2,625 ft) with 160 storeys, the Burj Khalifa Dubai has taken six years and 22 million man hours to complete.

Proclaimed a ‘vertical city’ by its developers Emaar, Burj Khalifa Dubai comprises luxury residential apartments, office space and the world’s first Armani Hotel and Armani Residences and will host world class entertainment, dining and leisure facilities. With a total built up area of around 6 million square feet, the tower is set to accommodate a population of over 12,000 people.

Burj Khalifa Dubai is to welcome its first residents in February 2010, with the opening of the luxurious Armani Residences followed by the unveiling of the Armani Hotel Dubai in March. ‘At the Top, Burj Dubai’, the tower’s 124th floor observation deck which offers breathtaking 360 degree views of the city is to open its doors to the public from tomorrow.

The official opening today of the Burj Khalifa Dubai is expected to provide a welcome boost to Dubai’s tourism industry. With two billion people worldwide expected to watch the event live, Dubai has the perfect opportunity to reaffirm itself as a premier tourist destination.

Adrian Jonlklaas of consultancy PKF commented: “The opening of the tower will definitely give a boost to Dubai’s hospitality industry. I don’t think there is anything like having a landmark development that you can label the world’s tallest tower.’
