Dubai has 2020 Olympics in its sights
Dubai has made clear its intentions of becoming the first Arab city to host the Olympics by setting up a committee to oversee a possible bid for the 2020 games.
According to WAM Emirates News Agency, an inaugural meeting was held earlier this week attended by Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who was reported to have urged the committee to work together to help Dubai win the bid, telling them:
“Nothing is impossible as long as we have the determination for change”
The committee meeting comprised several members of Dubai’s political elite and was chaired by Sheikh Mohammed’s son, the Crown Prince, suggesting strong support for the bid from the emirate’s government.
The success of the recent grand-prix in Abu Dhabi has proved the capability of the emirates’ ability to host international events suggesting its neighbour Dubai would be a serious contender to host the biggest sporting event of them all.
