UAE cement firms focus on expanding capacity

Major United Arab Emirates cement companies are focusing on quickly building capacity to take advantage of rising demand from the buoyant construction sector.

Infrastructure projects in the UAE are estimated at more than $700 billion over the next couple of years, which will ensure demand for construction materials and strong cement consumption for some time. Many of the leading UAE cement companies have announced capacity expansions, which are expected to reach 41 million tonnes by 2011.

Cement consumption in the UAE has grown at an annual rate of 25 per cent over the past four years with net sales revenue growing by 33 per cent over the same period.

The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah has emerged as the main centre for cement production in the UAE and the region. This is aided by its close access to limestone, the raw material used for cement.
