Marrakech No. 1 Tourist Destination in Morocco
The colourful city of Marrakech is receiving increasing attention as Morocco's tourism levels and economy are soaring.
Marrakech is Morocco’s third largest city and the No. 1 holiday hotspot. It is known as the ‘entertainment capital’ of Morocco and its popularity is due to its desert heat, rose-red Medina (a historical city), boutiques and lavish palaces. Investment is being ploughed into its infrastructure with a new train station, high-speed train links and construction of a new airport terminal.
Morocco's economy and GDP rose by 8.1% in 2006 (compared with 2.4% in 2005). King Mohammed VI has changed the laws, allowing foreign investors to take proceeds of property sales out of the country. In Marrakech there are a lot of upmarket developments under construction. In some areas, property prices have risen by about 50% in the past few years.
