The most northern of the United Arab Emirates, Ras Al Khaimah is unique in its natural beauty made up of diverse landscapes beyond the red sands of its desert including sweeping white beaches, dramatic mountains and lush green plains. Although it is lesser known than its famous neighbours Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this is set to change as Ras Al Khaimah continues to establish itself on the global stage as a premier tourist destination.
Situated just 45 minutes from Dubai International Airport and occupying a prime position on some of the world’s most important trade routes, close to large markets and with easy access to other GCC countries, Ras Al Khaimah has experienced continuous economic expansion in recent years. Following in the footsteps of Dubai, RAK is becoming just as recognized holiday destination, yet seen as a more affordable and laid back alternative.
Currently amidst a $250 million project to expand its tourism infrastructure, including its airport, hotels, resorts and world class entertainment facilities; this investment certainly seems to be paying off. Visitors to RAK increased by 40% in 2011 and by 2020 the emirate expects 20% of its GDP to be generated from tourism.
This vision has been further endorsed with the announcement that Al Marjan Island in RAK has been selected as the location for the first ever Real Madrid resort theme park, expected to attract 1m visitors every year.
