			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The latest figures from UCAS show Liverpool has been a first choice amongst students applying for university this year. While some universities have experienced a decline in applications in light of recent tuition fee changes, Liverpool has seen an increase of 11.4% compared with last year.</p>
<p>Despite the introduction of new top up fees, Liverpool has seen a boost in applications highlighting the city’s appeal with students. This reputation has been maintained by Liverpool’s universities work to have improve higher quality vocational courses, introduce a new range of bursaries and scholarships and also widen their access to more overseas students. </p>
<p>John McCarthy, Director of marketing at Liverpool Hope University, said: &#8220;All of the extra applications at Hope have come from outside Liverpool, and that&#8217;s partly to do with raising the profile of the university and the city.”<br />
&#8220;The new courses we offer in social work and forensic science are very popular and while applications are up by more than 11%, the number of people picking it [Liverpool Hope University] as their first choice has risen by 14%.”</p>
<p>UCAS figures have also highlighted how universities in Liverpool have a growing proportion of international students studying there.  For example, 8% of all students attending John Moores University,  are international , 11% of students at the University of  Liverpool are from overseas and 4% of those at Liverpool Hope University are international students; a figure which is  increasing at all three universities each year.</p>
<p>The increase of overseas students drawn to Liverpool has been helped by the city hosting the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine. As a teaching institution, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine attracts more than 500 students from over 50 countries each year, from PhD research and Masters programmes, working in partnership with health ministries, Universities and research institutions worldwide.</p>
<p>The University of Liverpool are aiming to attract even more overseas students through its strong relationship with China. Liverpool has strong links with students in China because of its satellite university set up over there called Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), one of the top ten universities in China. </p>
<p>The numbers of XJTLU students going to Liverpool is expected to grow by over 2,000 by 2015 as the link between the two becomes more established and the University proactively aims to take advantage of there being no cap on overseas student numbers where as the number of domestic students is limited.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There has been a significant number of Indian investors buying property in Dubai recently leading others to ask what exactly is enticing these investors now. Industry experts and analysts have offered several explanations as to why Dubai is attracting Indian investors in particular and suggest that the reasons are likely to spark similar trends amongst thousands of Russian, Chinese and British investors in coming years. </p>
<p>First and foremost, Dubai offers the complete package in terms of property investment fundamentals. It’s a safe environment that promotes secure business. The property market is tightly regulated and there is no capital gains tax or taxes on rental revenues. Dubai also offers a world class infrastructure and a high standard of cosmopolitan lifestyle that inherently attracts tenants and buyers alike. </p>
<p>As a result, Dubai enjoys some of the best rental yields in the world with owners consistently gaining between 7 &#8211; 10%, and some even achieving up to 12% in more prime locations like Dubai Marina or the Palm Jumeriah. Property is relatively easy to rent out or re-sell, provided the property is priced correctly and in the right area. The benefits for Landlords are further improved in Dubai where yearly rents are traditionally paid in cash up-front.</p>
<p>In addition Dubai is currently in position where prices have bottomed out, even beginning to see growth in some key areas of the city like Dubai Marina. Indian investors clearly expect growth over the next few years, a sentiment shared by several official sources and industry bodies. </p>
<p>Dubai shares strong links with India, they are major trade partners and a large segment of the UAE’s population is Indian.  It has been widely suggested this is why they have been the first to take advantage of the deals available in Dubai. Meanwhile there has been a marked global increase in interest from Russian, Chinese and British investors who are expected to buy significant amounts of property in Dubai in coming years.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Further details have emerged about the highly anticipated Murcia based Paramount Theme Park set to open in 2015. Local authorities, investors, the parks creators and representatives from Paramount all met in Murcia again last week to formally finalise their agreements and set out detailed plans for the future of the Park.</p>
<p>Jesus Samper, Managing Director of the company commissioned to create the Park stated that the project will generate over 10,000 jobs at least, and “every euro invested will generate three”. Samper went on to explain the Park will be operating at a profit by its second year which has pleased investors, local authorities and Paramount alike. The Paramount Theme Park will be the largest in Spain and the second largest in Europe requiring over €1 Billion of private investment.</p>
<p>Michael Bartok, Paramount’s representative responsible for the multinational licence said Murcia was of “strategic importance” for tourism, highlighting the “300 days of sunshine in the region”.</p>
<p>The Park its will contain a number of attractions based on some of Paramount’s biggest titles. It will be split into ‘zones’ inspired by the likes of Star Trek, Mission Impossible and Titanic as well as boasting several hotels, themed shopping malls, restaurants, bars and clubs and the largest conference centre in Murcia which will host over 15,000 people.</p>
<p>Other attractions will include a sci-fi 4D spectacular feature where visitors will be able to participate in The War of The Worlds and battle invading aliens.  In addition there’s a planned 3D experience designed to spook people with Paranormal Activity and flying ghosts.</p>
<p>Construction will start this year prompting industry experts to predict an increase in Murcia’s average house prices. Before the tourists descend on the area, Murcia’s local economy will benefit through the employment of thousands of construction workers, plumbers, electricians, park staff and so on, promoting wealth in the area.</p>
<p>Once the Park opens in 2015, millions are expected to visit every year which will have significant effects on the surrounding holiday accommodation. Giles Beswick, Director of Select Property which is one of Europe’s largest sellers of overseas property explained how property interest in Murcia is rising sharply;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It was encouraging to see a good turn out of window shoppers at A Place In The Sun Live last weekend, proving what we knew all along – that British consumers never lost their belief in property ownership, for lifestyle and investment, and will always come back to it as their preferred asset class to put any spare income and savings into.</p>
<p>But the questions I am asking myself over and over again at the moment are these; what are developers and sales agents offering that’s different? How have they changed in response to the changing needs of the market? What are the attributes that differentiate the credible specialists from the cowboys trying to make a quick buck in a beauty pageant like a holiday home expo?<br />
And I’m often left struggling for answers..</p>
<p>It’s staggers me to still see advertising almost every day offering ‘guaranteed returns’ that outstrip anything else the market has to offer, and marketers aggressively pushing short-term opportunities that look like nothing more than property paradise ponzi schemes. </p>
<p>I thought members of the buying public would have learned by now that ownership of any old property in any old country is not the closest thing to free money they can get, as many clearly had thought over the middle part of the last decade. As one investor told me once, “the property market in a global capitalist economy is just an organised system for transferring wealth from stupid people to smart people”!  If the last two years have done nothing else they should at least have inoculated holiday home owners and landlords against the thinking that market diligence and financial planning was for wimps.  </p>
<p>From a quick straw poll of some of my friends and associates in the industry, most shared the opinion that interest levels at the ‘APITS’ show were strongest for the territories that have seen the greatest severity of political or economic turmoil in the recent period: Egypt and Thailand have both been the subject of social and political revolution at the hands of their citizens. There&#8217;s Spain and Portugal, with their recently down-graded credit ratings having staved off EU bail-outs with bond issues. And the US, where the markets have shown their continuing vulnerability to global events following the crisis in Japan. </p>
<p>Maybe I’m underestimating buyers though, because what this tells me is that people are learning that opportunity is created not simply by the existence of a global property market, but by movements in that market. What attracts people more than anything to a particular destination or type of property investment is any compelling event that causes market movement. That could be a sudden influx of new people or capital, the promise of security or prosperity that previously wasn’t possible, the (re)introduction of credit, a shift in currency value even, or any number of other factors that we read about in the news every day at the moment.  </p>
<p>Last week I wrote about Dubai, and it has come as no surprise to me to since then to see a steady flow of positive news from the emirates; a safe harbour in the Middle East with a moderate political outlook, an international business and resident population, and a strong grip on the oil markets with prices predicted to reach $200 a barrel!  All good stimulus for property enquiries&#8230;</p>
<p>However, I still believe there&#8217;s a growing immunity to slick campaigns using seductive advertising. Buyers need more than that. They want to know the credentials of the people they are dealing with. They want to share information and experiences with other like-minded individuals.  They want people like us to personalise opportunities to be more relevant to them, and to collaborate better with partners in our space. All these things we can and are doing to change our market going forwards, and I believe this is where the realisation of the benefits that great companies can offer will be most apparent.   </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dubai’s Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) state that Dubai estate agents must be over 18, must own a CID good conduct certificate and must complete and pass the RERA training course. This action comes as a response to problems caused by some freelance estate agents in Dubai, who were advertising properties they did not have simply to generate potential clients.</p>
<p>Dubai estate agents have had to adapt to the changing property market conditions since the economic difficulties of 2008. Select Property is the largest seller of UAE property in Europe and has continued to excel throughout the difficulty times due to their quality property portfolio.</p>

<p>As CEO and founder of Select Property Mark has grown a unique telephone and web-based business which has delivered a turnover of over a billion pounds in 6 years. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Until 2008 the economy of Spain had been regarded as one of the most dynamic within the EU, attracting significant amounts of foreign investment. Spain&#8217;s economy had been credited with having avoided the virtual zero growth rates of some of its largest partners in the EU. In fact, the country&#8217;s economy had created more than half of all the new jobs in the European Union over the five years ending 2005.</p>
<p>More recently, the Spanish economy had benefited greatly from the global real estate boom, with construction representing an astonishing 16% of GDP and 12% of employment in its final year. According to calculations by the German newspaper Die Welt, Spain had been on course to overtake countries like Germany in per capita income by 2011. However, the downside of the now defunct real estate boom was a corresponding rise in the levels of personal debt; as prospective homeowners had struggled to meet asking prices, the average level of household debt tripled in less than a decade. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Discussions are underway between <a href="http://www.selectproperty.com/invest/ras-al-khaimah/">Ras Al Khaimah</a> and potential Indian partners to create a $1bn maritime city according to the CEO of the <a href="http://www.selectproperty.com/invest/ras-al-khaimah/">Ras al Khaimah</a> Free Trade Zone (RAKFTZ).</p>
<p>Speaking at the World Free Zone Conference in Hydrabad, Oussama El Omari said the planned maritime city development would be around 5 million square metres and require investment in the region of $1bn.</p>
<p>According to an article in the Indian newspaper Business Standard, RAKFTZ are also in talks with the Tata Group with a view to developing an IT park and GMR group about setting up an aircraft maintenance and repair unit in RAKFTZ.</p>
<p>Already home to 7,000 companies, 950 companies have joined RAKFTZ this year according to Omari and this latest news is further evidence of <a href="http://www.selectproperty.com/invest/ras-al-khaimah/">RAK</a>’s growing reputation as a business hub. Last month, Arabian Business reported that RAKFTZ was the most popular free zone for businesses looking to set up base in the UAE.</p>

<p>WOW RAK: WOW RAK is a120-acre mega theme park which is being constructed by Polo RAK Amusements in partnership with the RAK investment authority and RAK properties. The park is expected to be within the top 5 in the world. Features of the state of the art park include a huge live concert area/dance floor where visitors dance in artificial rain and shallow water. In addition the park will be home to an aqua football arena, its own artificial coral reef with 27 different types of water slide and the worlds largest man made waterfall.</p>
<p>RAK Dream Tours: This new project, spread over an area of 41,000 sq ft contains two restaurants housed in historic fort towers, set amidst meandering walkways and landscaped gardens complete with water fountains and running streams.</p>

Vaclav Hejtmanek, export consultant with the Czech Trade Promotion Agency, said his company is ready to provide information and assistance to Turkish firms to help find Czech suppliers and partners. CzechTrade maintains an office in Istanbul, hoping to boost cooperation between Turkish and Czech companies. Commercial relations between the Czech Republic and Turkey seem to have taken off in recent months. Last year Zentiva, the Czech Republic&#8217;s biggest manufacturer of generic drugs, acquired Turkey&#8217;s third-largest drug company, the largest ever investment by a Czech company in a foreign firm. Another Czech company, Cez, the largest power company in the Czech Republic, followed suit in June 2008 by acquiring the Sakarya Electricity Distribution Company in a joint venture with Turkey&#8217;s Akk&#8217;k Group. As of last year, the trade volume between Turkey and the Czech Republic was $1.5 billion and this is expected to reach $2.16 billion by the end of 2008. According to Czech officials, Turkey is among the priority countries with significant growth potential for business cooperation in the Czech export strategy for 2006-2010. The event which opened officially in Istanbul yesterday brings together around 1,000 businessmen from 16 countries for two days of business meetings. Turkey&#8217;s Foreign Trade Minister K&#8217;r?ad T&#8217;zmen spoke at the event and said &quot;More investment, more trade, more business &#8211; that&#8217;s the target,&quot; referring to relations between Turkey and the countries participating in the trade bridge event. In a telephone interview from Istanbul, Chicago 2016 Chairman Pat Ryan said&#8217; It&#8217;s not critical that a government leader be at each of these meetings. But it&#8217;s important to be at some of them. We have very strong support from Mayor Daley and city government. It&#8217;s important that he be here to demonstrate that strong partnership.&quot;The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is divided into five regions. There are more IOC members at the European meeting than in any of the other regions; possibly as many as 40 and only 60 votes are needed to win. The MoU is intended to enhance commercial market regulation and create a competitive environment that both protects society and develops the national economy. The MoU is an important step in enhancing cooperation between the Ministry of Economy and Ras Al Khaimah&#8217;s Department of Economic Development.  This agreement establishes an institutional framework consistent with the UAE&#8217;s international obligations and Ras Al Khaimah&#8217;s own plan for developing its investment environment and the necessary laws and regulations. Philippe Mueller, Construction Manager at the Swiss Centre for Electronics and Micro Technology (CSEM), the builders of the project said, &#8216;By the beginning of 2009, we will be able to have a reality test of the plant &#8211; the first of its kind in the world.&quot;CSEM is working in partnership with the Ras Al Khaimah government and is very ambitious about the solar initiative, which it hopes to spread widely within the UAE and globally in the future. In order to achieve this, Turkey has started to draw up strategic economic partnership policies with a number of Africa countries, where the opportunity and potential rate of growth is seen to be much higher in trade volume. </p>
<p>Turkey is seeking more export opportunities and is looking to diversify its trade markets to further strengthen its economy. Over the past few years, Turkey and Africa has experienced a positive growth in trade volume between the countries, evident as the value of this rose from $5.4 billion in 2003 to $17 billion in 2008.</p>
<p>On the 20th of February, President Abdullah Gul visited Kenya and then proceeded on to Tanzania. He was accompanied by more than 120 businessmen that represented Turkey&acirc;€™s effort in boosting trade relations with Africa. Turkish Presidents official three-day trip was his first to sub-Saharan nations.</p>

This report, outlined by DEC&acirc;€™s General Secretariat, reflects the council&acirc;€™s various activities that include developing operational plans for policy and initiative recommendations and discussing macroeconomic issues. </p>
<p>DEC was launched in 2003 by H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with the purpose of helping Dubai fulfil its vision to make the Emirate a hub of business and finance on the map of the global economy.</p>
<p>The council aims to combine representatives of Dubai&acirc;€™s local government departments and leaders of business. Membership of the DEC highlights the private-public partnership concept that is seen to be a best practice recognised worldwide in an economic development process. </p>

<p>DTCM assured the visiting delegation of the strong support provided by  Dubai  for the 9th Global Summit by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) in Santa Catarina. The General Director of DTCM, Mr. Khalid bin Sulayem, also had a meeting with the delegation on tourism growth opportunities. </p>
<p>Dubai&acirc;€™s tourism industry will proactively support the summit in order to promote the Emirates&acirc;€™ tourism industry, according to Mr. bin Sulayem. He added that the 8th WTTC Global Summit, which took place in Dubai last year, was a success because of the inspiring partnership between the private and public sectors in the tourism domain. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The National Aluminium Company, India&acirc;€™s biggest alumina maker, raised the projected cost of an aluminium smelter in Sumatra, Indonesia by 25 percent to $4 billion to pay for extra infrastructure, including rail links.  The venture, the Company&acirc;€™s first overseas, will invest $2.5 billion to build a plant and the remaining $1.5 billion will be for railways, a coal-fired power plant and a port. </p>
<p>Companies are stepping up investments in Indonesia, Southeast Asia&acirc;€™s largest economy, to boost profits and secure access to raw materials, such as coal. </p>
<p>The new venture, in which the  Ras Al Khaimah based RAK Minerals, has a 24 percent stake, may sell equity to local partners and regional governments, or through an initial share sale, after production starts in 2013. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The construction of nearly two dozen 5-star hotels plus several more premium hotel and hotel apartments in Ras Al Khaimah have been announced by RAK tourism, in a bid to promote and attract tourism in Ras Al Khaimah.</p>
<p>As the emirate continues to enjoy its unprecedented tourist boom, the completion date for the hotels will be within the next five years with construction work already started. The hotels will more than double the current supply of hotel rooms on Ras All Khaimah and will help to accommodate the projected 2.5 million tourists in the emirate by 2012, said Hilary McCormack, the Manager of RAK Tourism.</p>
<p>From the current capacity of over 1,800 hotel rooms, the influx of new hotel developments, including at least 20 internationally renowned 5-star hotels, will deliver up to 7,500 new rooms by 2012, she added. </p>
<p>&acirc;€œHotel development has jumped to a new level in Ras Al Khaimah as tourism activities continue to attract domestic, regional and international tourists to the emirate. It is also part of our strategy to keep watch for unique and innovative hotel operators in a bid to diversify our portfolio of hotels in the emirate. There is still so much room for expansion in this sector and we are looking forward to establishing partnerships with more world-renowned hotel brands in the future,&acirc;€ said Dr Khater Massaad, CEO of RAK Investment Authority.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Markets around the world soared yesterday, with the Istanbul Stock Exchange in  Turkey  closing its first session up almost 10 percent. </p>
<p>The good news started with the US announcement of a $20 billion bailout plan for Citigroup, positively affecting global markets, and the momentum in the Istanbul Stock Exchange picked up more speed with a stream of good news from the domestic environment.</p>
<p>&quot;The increase in the Istanbul Stock Exchange was higher than European markets because people are expecting the government to sign a standby deal with the International Monetary Fund,&quot; Izak Bilmen, from BGC Partners, said, adding that the markets were further boosted by investor belief that &quot;the government is going to launch another economic package to revive the domestic markets and help small and medium-sized enterprises.&quot; </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The development of Galatasaray&acirc;€™s new Seyrantepe stadium received a boost as a new consortium of companies from  Turkey  and the United Arab Emirates joined together to complete the football stadium in Turkey. The new stadium will replace the 48 year old Ali Sami Yen stadium located in Mecidiye&Atilde;&para;y. The new project will seat 52,000 spectators, and have a multi-purpose contractible roof and parking for 4,500 cars.</p>
<p>The Turkish ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Hakk&Auml;&plusmn; Akil, who was pivotal in bringing the consortium together said, &quot;I believe this will bring more investments in to Turkey and it will also strengthen our alliance with the United Arab Emirates.&quot;  </p>
<p>The project for the new stadium will cost around $700 million, with $200 million going to the construction of the stadium, $200 million for the land and rights to build the stadium and $300 million for development of the land where the previous stadium stood. One of the conditions of the tender was that in exchange for building the new stadium, the partnership, will have rights to develop the land that the old Ali Sami Yen stadium is located on.</p>

<p>Action Aviation, distributors of the SJ30, recently took a new world speed record in the jet by flying seven hours and seven minutes from London to  Dubai  on 10th November with a 41 minute refuelling stop in Istanbul. This London-Dubai record is currently the fastest time recorded for any aircraft below 20,000 lbs, as officially certified by the National Aeronautical Association. </p>

<p>The programme, now in its 8th year, introduces an exciting new &#039;Interactive Enviro-Spellathon&#039; for the first time, as an additional online option for teachers, parents and pupils to enjoy. </p>
<p>The aim of the programme is to increase the children’s knowledge and awareness of the rich natural habitat of the UAE as well as local and global conservation issues. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The investment arm of the emirate of  Ras Al Khaimah plans a $5 billion economic hub at Hyderabad in the south of India as it looks to expand its investments abroad.</p>
<p>The Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA) said on Tuesday it had signed an initial agreement with Andra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corp to set up Hyderabad Economic City, which will offer financial and healthcare services.</p>
<p>&quot;The partnership with the Andhra Pradesh government for the development of the Hyderabad Economic City is in line with RAKIA&#039;s strategy to fortify its portfolio of global investments,&quot; RAKIA&#039;s chief executive Khater Massaad said. &quot;India&#039;s fast-growing economy has opened a wide range of business opportunities and we intend to build on this momentum to further expand our activities in the country and across the region.&quot; </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>At the first African Business Forum in  Dubai  the UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi underlined commitment to closer regional and international relations. </p>
<p>Economic and trade relations between the UAE and Africa were top of the agenda on the first day of the inaugural edition of the African Business Forum in Dubai which will run until October 21st.</p>
<p>The Minister emphasized the strong commercial and investment relations between Africa and the UAE and urged business and government leaders to capitalize on the networking opportunities provided by the Forum.</p>
<p>The main purpose of the African Business Forum in Dubai is to gather Ministers of Trade and Industry and business executives from African countries for productive dialogue on African trade, business and commerce alongside their UAE partners. African delegates will visit key Dubai industrial and business sites during their stay. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The statistics department of  Dubai  World, the holding company that manages a portfolio of businesses and projects for the government of Dubai, have released figures showing that the non-oil trade between Dubai and the member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) reached 23 billion dirham’s in the first half of 2008. This is an increase of 30.4 percent compared to the same period in 2007.</p>
<p>Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore were Dubai&#039;s top three trade partners within ASEAN, which accounted for 34.3 percent, 24.8 percent and 18.4 percent respectively of the total non-oil trade. </p>
<p>&quot;The UAE, particularly Dubai, has strong trade and economic relations with ASEAN countries based on close cooperation in various areas, free capital flow, joint ventures and mutual investments,&quot; said Saeed Alqaizi, a senior official with Dubai World. &quot;This has reflected very positively in the impressive growth of trade between the economies over the years,&quot; he added. </p>

<p>During the general conference, elections will be held for 11 members of the 35 member board of governors whose terms have ended. Turkey is hoping to be elected to the board for a two-year term from the group for Western Europe. </p>
<p>At the ‘Atoms for Peace’ event in 1957 the agency was set up within the United Nations. The agency works with its member states and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technology. </p>

His partners on the potential deal are said to include the Royal Family of  Dubai .</p>
<p>Bloomberg reports that Gatwick&#039;s owner BAA Ltd plans to sell the airport, valued at about $5.4 billion. Branson&#039;s personal fortune is estimated at $2.8 billion and he plans to form a consortium to bid for the airport, which is expected to include Dubai’s royal family. </p>
