Spain: tourist arrivals up in January
Spain received an increased year on year number of foreign tourist arrivals in January according to the tourism minister, suggesting a return of growth to the sector.
Approximately 2.65 million foreign tourists visited Spain last month, marking an increase of 1.1% compared to January 2009.
Spain remained most popular amongst British tourists, who made up 20% of January arrivals. The number of German visitors grew by 6.3%, representing Spain’s second-largest source of January arrivals accounting for 16.4% of the total.
These figures represent a positive start to the year for Spain’s tourism industry which has inevitably felt the recent effects of the economic downturn and follows the announcement of the Spanish government’s pledge to increase its spend by 6.4% on promoting the country overseas as a tourist destination.
