Billionaire investor puts bets on Bulgaria

Tottenham Hotspur and Rangers football club investor Joe Lewis is to invest 70 million pounds (100.52 million euro) in the Bulgarian property market. In Septmeber 2007, Lewis bought a stake in one of Wall Street's big five investment banks Bear Stearns.

Lewis originally made his name when he teamed up with speculators to bet on the pound crashing out of the European exchange-rate mechanism 15 years ago.

Operating from the Bahamas, Lewis has put money behind Windsorville Investments, an investment group focused on commercial property development in Bulgaria’s major cities. Sofia remains one of Europe’s cheapest office locations and is in line for further EU and private investment.

Lewis’ total wealth is difficult to analyse but estimates add up to 2.8 billion pounds (4.02 billion euro).
