Turkey and Syria are scheduled to sign a cooperation agreement between the two countries in order to increase tourism over the next three years. Syrian Minister of Tourism, Saadallah Aghaa Al Kala, and his Turkish counterpart, Ertugrul Gunay, will finalise the agreement at the opening of the Eastern Mediterranean International Travel & Tourism Exhibition, EMITT, 2009.
EMITT, taking place in Istanbul on the 12th of Feb, is the largest tourism fair in Turkey and is estimated to be amongst the biggest in the eastern Mediterranean. Consisting of 3,000 exhibitors from around 50 countries, the fair is expected to attract around 100,000 visitors this year.
Turkish Hotels Federation or TUROFEDâ€™s president, Ahmet Barut, added that participation in the exhibition has increased by 20 percent since last year. This tourism fair highlights Turkey as a popular destination, which attracted 26 million tourists that brought revenue of $22 billion in 2008.
