All eyes were on Dubai Marina on Friday as the Dubai International Parachute Championship got off to a flying start with around 400 parachutists from 45 countries taking part.
The championship, believed to be the first of its kind in the UAE, is divided into three disciplines: formation accuracy, formation skydiving and canopy piloting with competitors awarded points throughout the 11 day competition.
Promoting the event, Yousif Hassan Al Hammadi, chairman of the organising committee and president of the Emirates Aviation Association explained:
“The intention behind organising this championship is to promote and develop parachuting in the country. With so many top-level parachuters in the fray, I am sure aviation sport in the UAE will get a major boost. If you ask me, this is perhaps the biggest championship ever to be organised. I am sure all the participating teams will return home with fond memories of their stay in Dubai.”
Entry is free for spectators to enjoy the event which runs for the remainder of the week.
