High tourist volumes see Dubai Mall clinch most visited retail destination

Dubai Mall has won the title of most visited retail destination in the world for the third consecutive year.

Tourists played a major role in securing Dubai Mall the title of most visited retail destination in the world.

This is the third consecutive year the emirate has claimed the title, with the mall attracting a total of 75 million visitors in 2013.

Dubai Mall was streets ahead of the competition, with a statement from mall developer Emaar Properties showing that it surpassed: Mall of America and Bullring Birmingham in the UK (with 40 million visitors each), Intu Trafford Centre, UK (30 million visitors), Part Dieu Lyon, France (29.4 million visitors), and West Edmonton Mall, Canada (28 million visitors).

Tourists accounted for over 40% of total visitor numbers to Dubai Mall last year, with the majority coming from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries – although there were also visitors from Europe, China, India and Russia.

Speaking to Gulf News, head of research for the Middle East and North Africa at Jones Lang LaSalle, Craig Plumb, said that most people make a beeline for the attractions within the mall rather than go shopping.

Dubai Mall features a range of attractions including Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo and KidZania, often meaning people visit “the Downtown area for entertainment and food and beverages rather than shopping”.

Dubai continues to attract increasing numbers of tourists each year, with the emirate welcoming 7.9 million visitors in the first nine months of 2013, up 9.8% compared with the previous year, according to Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM).
