Emirates is launching three new A380 routes to add to its world-leading network and bring even more tourists to its Dubai base.
- Dubai’s Emirates Airline will have launched three new A380 routes by the end of this week
- San Francisco, Milan and Houston to welcome double-decker jet next week
- The expansion is in line with the increased popularity of Dubai as tourism hotspot
Emirates has launched three new Airbus A380 routes over the course of this week. December 1st saw the Dubai-based carrier fly the double-decked plane to San Francisco, followed by consecutive launched to Milan and Houston on the 2nd and 3rd respectively.
All of the A380s will operate from Dubai International Airport’s Concourse A, which is the world’s first purpose-built facility for the airliner and the three new routes will bring Emirates’ total to 33 destinations.
“Emirates now has 55 A380s in its fleet – one third of all A380s currently in the skies,” said Hubert Frach, Emirates’ divisional senior vice president of commercial operations.
“Having the ability to launch three new A380 destinations in three days is no small feat. It requires careful planning, multi-department coordination, airport preparedness and above all the tenacity to make it happen,” he added.
The expansion of the A380 network is also indicative of the growing popularity of Dubai as a major tourism destination. The emirate is aiming to attract 20 million annual tourists by the time it hosts World Expo 2020 – a six month project that has been backed by widespread property investment.
Only last week, Dubai stated it needed to build over 250 more hotels to cope with the demand for accommodation as visitor numbers continue to increase between now and 2020.
Furthermore, John Podaras, a Partner at the Dubai-based consultancy Hotel Development Resources, suggest that in order to meet demand the emirate’s tourism authorities could look to utilise some of the existing holiday homes and apartments that are already built.
